Fated at Beihang
I earned my bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Automation from Politecnico di Milano. Just as I was eagerly anticipating the start of my master's studies, an opportunity arose that would change the course of my life. Politecnico di Milano and Beihang University had launched a double master degree program in Electrical Engineering and Automation, as well as Aerospace Engineering. Through my efforts, I was fortunate to be among the first students selected for this program. Upon receiving the admission letter from Beihang, I felt a mix of excitement and nerves. Driven by a deep desire for the unknown and a commitment to academic excellence, I set foot on this land in the East.
Upon arriving in Beijing, I was welcomed by the sincere smiles and warm greetings of my fellow students, which quickly eased my sense of unfamiliarity. Once I got to the university, I was pleasantly surprised by the thoughtful and well-organized orientation activities for newcomers. The registration process was smooth and efficient, and the Chinese classmates I had met in Milan were always there to assist me, making me feel the warmth and hospitality like a gentle spring breeze.
I embarked on my academic journey at Beihang University. The courses offered were diverse and challenging, providing a depth and breadth of theoretical knowledge that greatly enriched my learning experience. Hands-on activities in the laboratory deepened my understanding of theories that had once seemed obscure. Furthermore, interacting with students from diverse countries not only expanded my appreciation for different cultures but also encouraged me to consider various perspectives, significantly enriching my academic insight and sharpening my critical thinking skills.
During my study at Beihang, I faced numerous challenges. Courses such as Aerospace Dynamics and Advanced Control Theory involved intricate formulas and concepts, demanding not only a solid understanding of the theories but also the ability to apply them to real-world problems. The assignments were often comprehensive and practical, and the exams were quite demanding. To tackle these challenges, I dedicated substantial time to studying theoretical concepts and reviewing relevant literature. Additionally, I joined extracurricular study groups, which provided valuable support. Through persistent effort, my academic performance improved significantly, and my theses and reports received commendation from my professors.
My supervisor, Professor WANG Shaoping, was my guiding light on this academic journey. From my very first day at the university, she led me with a blend of preciseness and patience. She dedicated considerable time and effort to my development both in laboratory discussions and in the guidance of thesis writing. She was not only focused on my academic and research progress but also took a genuine interest in my daily life, helping me navigate any challenges I faced. Under her mentorship, I learned how to confront obstacles and push my boundaries, laying a solid foundation for my future endeavors. Even years after my graduation, Professor Wang continues to offer me her support and guidance. I feel incredibly fortunate and grateful to have been her student. I also want to extend my gratitude to Professor Pignari and project coordinator Livia De Zan at Politecnico di Milano; without their support, it would have been difficult to achieve such a rewarding experience.
Campus life at Beihang was lively and full of excitement. During my studies, I joined the Beihang International Student Union, where I connected with friends from around the world. We regularly organized various activities, such as sports competitions and outdoor activities. Together, we exchanged our cultures and experiences while discovering the stunning landscapes of China. I particularly cherish the gatherings during the Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival, which allowed me to appreciate the richness of traditional Chinese culture. I also shared Italian cuisine, art, and music with my Chinese classmates. Through these cross-cultural interactions, we deepened our understanding of each other's cultures, and I even picked up Chinese, growing increasingly fond of the life here.
My Career in China
Upon graduating, I was presented with two promising career paths, each brimming with opportunities. On one hand, I secured a position as an engineering manager at an international company in China's electrical industry, a role that required both technical expertise and strong management skills. My educational background at Beihang provided me with a distinct advantage in this competitive job market. On the other hand, I also pursued my passion for writing, having published several works in Italy. Some of which were professional publications, while others offered reflections on my experiences in China. Currently, I am striving to have my writings published in China, contributing in my own small way to the cultural exchange between our two countries.
My background as an international student at Beihang has been pivotal to my career development, providing me with unique job opportunities and platforms for growth. I've had the privilege of collaborating with NASA, several embassies, and the Italian Cultural Center in Beijing. These experiences have enriched my professional resume and helped me establish a strong reputation within the industry.
The experiences of studying at Beihang and working in China have not only contributed to my academic and professional growth but also marked a profound personal transformation. I've become more resilient and confident, better equipped to face life's challenges and setbacks. China has now become my second home, offering me a new life and shaping my worldview and values. I've learned to respect diverse cultures and beliefs, as well as to embrace and understand others. Witnessing China's rapid development has filled me with confidence and optimism for the future. I am deeply moved by the spirit of the Chinese people, who work tirelessly to realize their dreams, and this spirit continues to inspire me.
Future Prospects
Looking ahead, I am filled with anticipation and confidence. I plan to continue developing my career along both paths—as an engineer manager and as a writer. As an engineer manager, I aim to continuously improve my technical and management skills, leading my team to complete more challenging projects and contributing more to the company's growth. Meanwhile as a writer, I hope to create more outstanding works and share my thoughts and perspectives to a wider audience.
I also hope to maintain close ties with my alma mater, Beihang, and contribute to the university's development in any way I can. I look forward to seeing more international students come to Beihang and experience the quality education and unique culture of one of China's top universities. Additionally, I hope to continue promoting cultural exchanges between China and Italy, allowing more people to appreciate the cultural treasures of both nations and deepening the friendship between their peoples.
