Description: The construction of the National Palace of Ethnic Cultures was proposed by Chairman Mao Zedong, and its site selection and design were approved by Premier Zhou Enlai. Following its completion on October 6, 1959, it was open to the public and, upon its unveiling, was recognized as one of the "Ten Great Buildings" in Beijing, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the People's Republic of China. It is a symbol of the unity, development, and prosperity of the Chinese nation, as well as that of the glorious success of the ethnic policies of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Countless CPC and state leaders have attended major events at this landmark venue, which is then referred to as the "No. 1 Palace of the Republic", the "Palace of National Culture", and the "Home to All Ethnic Groups." It currently houses nearly 50,000 precious cultural relics, more than 200,000 ancient books, over 400,000 other books, and over 4,181 calligraphic works and paintings, many of which are unique masterpieces.
