The 21st century has entered its second decade and Generation Z is getting heard, infusing unprecedented energy into the BMF. Born in 2003, the percussionist Zhang Fang is one of the shiniest stars as the 2020 BBC Young Musician. For the BMF he and his pals shall present a percussion concert that enjoys the privilege of looking over the history of music: both paying homage to the tango master Astor Piazzolla, and reversing it in Emmanuel Séjourné's Gotan; both acoustic and plugged-in; both the Zen from the Japanese Daiki Kato and the inventions of the Chinese Heng Liu. Angela Dixon, the chair of jury in the BBC competition, praised Zhang's playing for its "kaleidoscope of colours and expression", and this concert shows.
