Nowadays, people are worried about the global climate and call for action. In this context, we look back on baroque composer Georg Friedrich Handel's (1685-1759) Nine German Arias and revisit Nature in his eyes. This set of works consists of nine short songs, performed by a soprano and on instruments of the Baroque era. It sets poems by German poet Barthel Heinrich Brocks (1680-1747). The praise of the beauty of nature and eternal life runs through all the nine arias. It is unique in Handel's works for its novel orchestration, poetic emotions, joy and pain interwoven, and a style between baroque and early Romanticism.
In Songs of Nature, produced by a Belgian team, Handel's works alternate with new short pieces of Antwerp composer Wim Henderickx in the form of a Baroque ensemble performance. This theater work is jointly performed by soprano Li Jingjing and six musicians from Shanghai Camerata. Chinese director Shuang Zou and Australian scenographer Dan Porta work together to conceive the music theater.
