Topics: Learn how smoke tree is not only a famous red tree species meant for ornamentation, but also an ancient plant dye, and how records show it being used to dye emperors' robes in the past. Through this activity, participants will familiarize themselves with smoke trees, the culture behind them, and their value. They will also gain an understanding into traditional Chinese culture, traditional Chinese plant dyes and basic dyeing-related knowledge.

Lectures will be given to introduce the value of smoke trees. Participants will then get to experience the dyeing and weaving process for themselves as they make their own handkerchieves by modeling, mordanting, boiling and dyeing.
