I. School Choice
Children of foreign nationals based in Beijing can apply to attend a school for children of foreign nationals or a regular primary or secondary school.

1. Schools for children of foreign nationals

At present, there are 16 schools for children of foreign nationals in Beijing (as listed in the attachment) across three administrative districts including Chaoyang, Haidian, and Shunyi District. These schools provide an international curriculum from kindergarten to senior high school.

2. Regular primary or secondary schools

At regular primary or secondary schools, international students are entitled to engage in all educational activities provided for Chinese Students. For detailed lists of schools, please visit the official website of the education authorities of each district.

II. Application

1. Applying to schools for children of foreign nationals

Please contact the school of your choice and submit application materials as required directly to the school.

2. Applying to a regular primary or secondary school

(1) Primary and junior high school

Please visit the official website of Beijing Municipal Education Commission (http://jw.beijing.gov.cn/), and log in to the Beijing Compulsory Education Enrollment Service Platform (yjrx.bjedu.cn) within the required time (usually in May of each year, subject to the notice issued by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission) to find school information, technical service telephone numbers and policy consultation telephone numbers of each district. For specific questions, please contact the education commission of the district you live in.

(2) Senior High School

For specific questions, please contact the school directly.

III. Issues Related to Enrollment Policy of Regular Primary and Secondary Schools

1. Legal guardians 

If the parents of international students are not residents in Beijing Municipality during their children's schooling, they shall produce an official entrustment assigning a permanent foreign or Chinese resident to serve as the student's guardian and submit a notarized or certified birth certificate of the student(s) and the guardian's letter of attorney. The entrusted shall also conduct a notarization of entrustment acceptance in Beijing Municipality.

2. Visas and residence certificates

Overseas applicants who intend to visit and study in Beijing Municipality shall apply for an X1 or X2 visa at an embassy or consulate of China, or foreign agencies entrusted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, in the country or region where they live before their entry. For long-term studies, international students shall submit relevant materials, including certificates filed by administrative authorities of education and an Admission Notice issued by the school (students above the age of 18 shall also submit a Physical Examination Record for Foreigners), when applying for an X1 visa. For short-term studies, international students shall submit relevant materials, including certificates filed by an administrative authority of education and an Admission Notice issued by the school, when applying for X2 visa.

Foreign applicants holding other types of visas, stay permits, or non-X residence permits and meeting the visa issuance conditions to stay in Beijing and apply for long-term studies shall apply for a new visa or a change of visa. The student should provide certificates filed by an administrative authority of education and an Admission Notice issued by the school to the exit and entry administration of the public security departments in Beijing Municipality.

If an international student needs to obtain a residence permit after entry, he/she shall apply for a residence permit for X visa holders at the exit and entry administration of the public security departments in Beijing Municipality within 30 days after entry, and submit relevant materials including the admission letter issued by the school and an admission certificate indicating the study period.

For visa extension, international students shall apply and submit the required materials to the exit and entry administration of the public security departments in Beijing Municipality seven days before the expiration of the period of stay indicated in the visa.

For residence permit extension, international students shall apply and submit the required materials to the exit and entry administration of the public security departments in Beijing Municipality 30 days before the expiration of the period of stay.
