On October 27, 33 Baer's pochards were spotted at Guanting Reservoir. Previously, only a few of them were seen there, but this appearance highlights the continued improvement of the reservoir's biodiversity.

Baer's pochards are highly selective about their habitats, particularly in terms of water quality. They prefer lakes, ponds and river areas with slow currents and abundant aquatic plants. Listed as a National 1st-class protected animal in China, the Baer's pochards are also classified as a critically endangered species globally. As of 2025, their recorded population in China stood at 2,555.

As temperatures drop, migrating birds begin their journey southward to warmer regions. In addition to Baer's pochards, species such as Eurasian spoonbills and Great cormorants have also made stopovers at the Guanting Reservoir.
