Today, Beijing's pollen concentration will remain high at level 4 for the most of the day. Due to "warm winter", the pollen season has arrived about five days earlier than usual, with peak levels expected in mid-March.

The primary spring allergens in Beijing include those from elm, cypress, poplar, willow, and pine species. In the face of the allergy season, Beijing has implemented the following prevention and control measures.

Legislation: The Beijing's Measures for the Implementation of the Forest Law of the People's Republic of China took effect on January 1, 2026. The management and prevention of allergenic pollen and willow catkins are included in these measures.

Pruning: Measures are taken to remove male cones from male Chinese juniper trees.

Spraying: Mist cannon trucks are being deployed to spray water and moisten the ground to help pollen settle.

Technology: The Beijing University of Agriculture has developed a pollen fixative that forms a translucent coating on the surface of male Chinese juniper trees.

Renewal: Urban tree species are systematically replaced with pollen-reducing and asthma-friendly alternatives.

So, how can those with pollen allergies protect themselves and minimize disruptions to daily life during this time? Please check out these practical prevention tips!

Before Going Out:

1. Check real-time pollen levels: Check via the "Pollen Detection and Forecast" (花粉检测预报) section of the "Jingtong" mini-program.

2. Check wind conditions, humidity and precipitation: On sunny, dry days with light wind, pollen concentration is relatively high, so minimize trips if possible. On days with obvious rainfall or winds stronger than force 4, pollen concentration decreases.

3. General rule: Avoid going out during the highest pollen concentration period (10:00–17:00).

4. Physical protection: Prepare protective masks and goggles to prevent pollen from entering your eyes, nose and mouth.

After Returning Home

1. Cleaning: Remove outer clothing promptly and clean the face, eyes, nasal passages and other parts that can easily retain pollen.

2. Precautions: Open windows as little as possible and avoid drying clothes or bedding outdoors to prevent pollen from sticking to them.

3. Medical Care: For severe allergic symptoms, use pollen barrier sprays or use medication under medical supervision.

May this pollen season be a little easier for you.
