In 2024, water consumption per CNY 10,000 of GDP decreased to 8.45 cubic meters. In other words, every CNY 10,000 of GDP generated in Beijing in 2024 consumed 8.45 cubic meters of water. This reflects that each cubic meter of water contributed to an increase of CNY 1,183 in GDP, making Beijing a national leader in water-use efficiency.
Statistics show that in 2024, the city consumed 2,534 million cubic meters of water for production and daily life, with over 140 million cubic meters of water recycled. In the industrial and sanitation sectors, recycled water accounted for over 30 percent of total water consumption in each sector.
For agricultural water conservation, the city built and renovated irrigation projects with efficient water-saving equipment covering approximately 6,800 hectares of land, while a total of 46,700 hectares was equipped with water-saving technologies. To optimize the industrial structure, 32 projects related to general manufacturing processes were phased out. Additionally, 10 major water-consuming enterprises in Beijing were recognized as frontrunners in water-use efficiency. Over 200 kilometers of water pipelines were upgraded, reducing the leakage rate of Beijing's public water supply network to less than 8.5 percent.
The city also strengthened credit support for water-saving programs and services. Its largest single water-saving loan amounted to CNY 500 million, and CNY 1.5 billion in green financial bonds was issued. Moreover, Beijing promoted trade-in policies for consumer goods, resulting in the sale of about 14,500 water-saving appliances across five categories. 30 water conservation management contracting projects were also promoted, attracting CNY 130 million in social capital investment.
Beijing has also been actively promoting its "Water Saving +" initiative, blending water conservation efforts with various thematic activities, such as "Water Saving + Sports", "Water Saving + Culture", "Water Saving + Livelihood" and so on.
