Beijing's first 5G-A (5G-Advanced) experimental base station, built by China Mobile International Information Port in Changping District, was unveiled recently after the field construction for integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) and passive IoT facilities for the 5G-A lab had been completed.

5G-A, also known as 5.5G, is a transitory phase between 5G and 6G cellular network technologies. As 5G Release 17 was frozen in June 2022, 5G technology has officially entered the second half of its evolution. The era of 5G-A is almost here, with 6G coming soon.

Based on the existing 5G network, Beijing aims to utilize its advantageous market size and industrial system to promote the integration of innovation chains and industry chains by making good use of 5G-A technology. The technological innovation is expected to bring outcomes that are more practically useful and empower the construction of a digital China.
