Standing at the frontier of artificial intelligence (AI), the field of world models is becoming a new arena for global technological competition. At the recent 2026 World Models Summit Forum (2026世界模型高峰论坛), the Beijing Key Laboratory of General World Models (通用世界模型北京市重点实验室) was inaugurated as China's first provincial-ministerial-level key laboratory dedicated to world models.
The laboratory will support the development of Beijing as an international science and technology innovation center, strengthen the theoretical foundations, and foster closer integration among industry, academia, and research. It will carry out systematic research aimed at breakthroughs in fundamental theories, key technology frameworks, and representative application systems of world models. The laboratory will also serve the applications in areas such as embodied AI, intelligent driving, and content creation, underlining both original innovation and the translation of research outcomes into industrial applications. With the approval granted for the laboratory's establishment, general world models are entering a new phase, moving beyond company-level technological exploration to benefit from city-level research platforms and shared research capabilities.
World models and language models have fundamental differences in their modalities, modes of representation, areas of focus, and underlying units. They can be regarded as a next generation of models that are more general-purpose and intelligent. Their defining characteristics, including generality across modalities, interaction flexibility, and semantic consistency, also pose major research challenges. Today, world models are at a critical juncture, transitioning from content generation and interactive simulation to general-purpose cognition. The next phase of competition will not be about which model can generate the most realistic outputs, but which can represent the real world as a measurable, predictable, and verifiable state space.
