In 2022, the total investment in research and experimental development (R&D) in Beijing reached CNY 284.33 billion, showing a year-on-year increase of 8.1 percent. This accounted for 9.2 percent of the total R&D investment in the country.

In recent years, with focus to strengthen its capacity for basic research, Beijing has continuously improved its diversified investment mechanisms for basic research, accelerated the construction and operation of major scientific and technological infrastructure, and cultivated and established new R&D institutions. As a result, the basic research capabilities of various innovative entities have continued to improve. Statistics show that in 2022, the funds allocated for basic research amounted to CNY 47.07 billion, representing an 11.4 percent increase from the previous year. This accounts for 16.6 percent of the total R&D budget for the city, marking a steady y-o-y increase of 0.5 percentage points.

With the ongoing improvement in government guidance and support, enterprise innovation has been revitalized and its contribution to driving the growth of R&D investment across all sectors has been strengthened. In 2022, the investment in R&D by enterprises reached CNY 124 billion, indicating a y-o-y increase of 9.1 percent. This accounted for 48.3 percent to the total growth of R&D investment in the city, an increase of 5.8 percentage points compared to the previous year.
