Eligibility:

If the current employer continues to employ the applicant in his or her original position (occupation), he or she should apply to the decision-making institution 30 days before the expiry of the applicant's work permit. The following information may help you in the process of extending the Foreigner's Work Permit.

The applicant shall not be over 60 years old. There is no age limit for the high-end foreign talents (Category A). People who meet the requirements specified in laws and regulations are also eligible.

► One original (electronic or paper) copy of the Application Form for Extending the Foreigner's Work Permit. After logging in to https://fuwu.most.gov.cn/lhgzweb/ to fill out the form online and print it out, the applicant must sign their name, have the employer's or authorizing department's official seal affixed, and upload it onto the system.

► One original (electronic or paper) copy of the employment contract or certificate of employment.

a. The applicant should provide an unaltered employment contract in Chinese which the applicant has signed and the employer has affixed with their official seal.

b. The employment contract must include this essential content: work location, job description, wage or salary, duration of employment, position, and the seal (signature) page.

c. Certificate of employment is applicable to individuals who are in execution of agreements between governments or international organizations, and is also applicable to chief representatives or representatives of different kinds of representative offices to China or service providers of overseas contracts (Representative offices must provide originals of representative certificates).

► Also required is the first page of the applicant's passport (or other international travel documents) and an original copy of the information page on the residence permit.

► One original (electronic or card) copy of the Foreigner's Work Permit. This includes a Foreign Expert Certificate and Foreigner Employment Certificate within the current validity period.

► Other materials.

► All original materials and Chinese translations must be uploaded (in original color) to the management and service system for foreigners working in China at: https://fuwu.most.gov.cn/lhgzweb/.

Please note: All non-Chinese certification materials submitted must be provided with Chinese translations and stamped with the official seal of the employer (except for passports or international travel documents). The accepting institution or the decision-making institution may request that the employer to submit a corrected version if there is a serious discrepancy between the Chinese translation and the original.


After your online pre-approval has been granted, please make an appointment on the system, then bring your appointment voucher and all original application materials to a relevant site for handling.

Note: High-Level Foreign Talents (Class A) do not need to schedule an appointment and can bring all materials directly on-site for handling. High-Level Foreign Talents (Class A) selected by the Domestic Talent Introduction Program can complete the entire process online.

Pre-approval period: The system conducts automatic reviews in two batches per day at midnight and noon (High-Level Foreign Talents (Class A) reviews are completed manually; the processing timeline for such reviews is one workday.)

Processing period: Three working days

· Application for the extension of work permits should be submitted to the authorizing institution within 30 to 90 days before the work permit's expiry date.

· In the case of a change of position within the same entity, including promotion from a professional position to an administrative position, a letter of application for a change of position and corresponding certifying material should be submitted upon applying for extension.

· In the case of a new position (occupation), the existing work permit must be cancelled and the Foreigner's Work Permit must be applied for again.

· If the applicant applies for extension as a High-Level Foreign Talent (Class A), corresponding certifying material must be submitted. As for the matter of salary commitments, the salary commitment letter, the personal income tax record consistent with the commitment (original Tax Payment Certificate) and a screen capture document (stamped with official seal) of the query on individual income tax withholding details at the Natural Person E-Tax Bureau Website must be submitted when applying for work permit extension.

· Where laws or regulations of China stipulate that the responsible sectoral authorities must approve the extension first, the approval from the responsible sectoral authorities must be submitted. These include representative certificates, physicians' medical licenses, short-term medical practice licenses, employee certificates, filing record receipts for temporary activities from NGOs abroad, etc., while the professional qualification certificate includes chefs' certificates, coaching certificates, etc.

· If it is necessary to extend the Foreign Experts Certificate and Alien Employment Permit within the validity period, an application may be submitted from the extension interface of the original certificates.
