Resident correspondents in Beijing can apply for a residence permit with a minimum validity of 180 days and a maximum of one year.


1. A valid passport or other international travel documents.

2. A completed VISA / STAY PERMIT / RESIDENCE PERMIT APPLICATION FORM with a recent half-length, white background, bareheaded, full-faced 2-inch color photo. Please fill in the application form in black ink, and include the employer's official seal.

3. The applicant's valid accommodation registration form obtained from either the local police station or hotel of current residence.

4. J1 visa holders shall submit the approval letter and Journalist Certificate issued by the press and media administration authorities of either the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council of China.

5. Applicants above the age of 18 who apply for a residence permit with validity of more than 1 year shall provide a Verification Certificate of Medical Examination Records of Overseas Personnel issued by entry-exit health and quarantine institutions in China. This verification certificate is valid for 6 months after the date of issuance.

Pay the application fee and pick up your documents from the visa applications hall.

The entire process from submission of materials to pick-up will take seven working days.

The fee for a residence permit with a validity of less than one year is CNY ¥400 (per applicant).

The fee for a residence permit with one to three years' validity is CNY ¥800 (per applicant).

The fee for a residence permit with three to five years' validity is CNY ¥1,000 (per applicant).

1. The applicant shall complete a face-to-face interview.

2. For the above-stated materials, all original documents must be verified and photocopies must be submitted.

3. Any application material in a foreign language (except English) should be translated into Chinese.

4. Any applicant who does not nullify China's household registration should only submit an application after the cancellation of household registration.


1. When visas held by foreigners specify the need to apply for residence permits after entry, such foreigners shall, within 30 days from the date of entry, apply for a Foreigner Residence Permit. 

2. Foreigners residing in China who apply for an extension of the duration of residence shall file their applications at least 30 days prior to the expiration of their residence permits.

3. While the applicant's passport or other travel document is under legal custody of the exit-entry authority for the issuance of visa or resident permit, the applicant may, bearing the receipt notice of the application herein, reside legally within the territory of China.

4. When the registered information in a foreigner's residence permit has changed (including the bearer's name, sex, date of birth, reason for residence, duration of residence, date and place of issuance, passport number, or other international travel document numbers), the holder shall, within 10 days from the date of change, report to an exit-entry administration organ of a public security bureau above the county level in the place of residence to proceed with alteration formalities.

5. The entity employing a foreigner shall report to an exit and entry administration organ of apublic security bureau in a timely manner when one of the following circumstances arises: a foreign employee resigns, changes employment locations, violates the exit-entry administration provisions, dies, disappears, or other serious circumstances arise. 

6. An exit and entry administration organ of a public security bureau may verify the purpose of the application through various means including interviews, telephone inquiries, and on-the-spot investigations.

7. All decisions made by an exit and entry administration organ of a public security bureau regarding rejected applications for extension or reissuance of ordinary visas, non-issuance of a foreigners' stay or residence permits, or refusal to extend the duration of residence shall be final.

The right to interpret this Instruction shall reside in the Exit-Entry Administration Department of Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau.
