If you're a foreigner who has a short stay in Beijing for the purpose of study, you can apply for X2 (short-term study) visa extension or renewal for foreigners by following steps.

► Your valid passport or other international travel documents.

► A completely filled and signed VISA / STAY PERMIT / RESIDENCE PERMIT APPLICATION FORM with a recent passport-style photo (full-faced, bareheaded, against a white background, color print, two-inches, half-length). Please use black ink to fill and sign the form. A stamp of the school's official seal is also required on the form.

► Your valid accommodation registration obtained from your current hotel or local police station.

► For current X2 visa holders, please submit the admission notice or certification of enrollment issued by the host institution in Beijing.

For non-X2 visa holders, besides the aforesaid documents, please submit the Visa Application Form for Study in China (Form JW201/JW202).

· X2 visa holders can apply for an extension with a validity of no more than 180 days.

· Applicants can apply for an X2 visa renewal with a validity of less than one year, stay duration of less than 180 days, and various numbers of entries ranging from zero to two. However, the accumulative duration of stay with the renewed visa cannot exceed one year from the date of the latest entry to China.

· The extension of a current X2 visa is only valid for this referred entry and does not affect the number of entries or the validity indicated on the original visa. The accumulated term of extension shall not exceed the original duration of stay, which is specified on the visa.

· The applicant must go through a face-to-face interview. However, applicants under 16 or over 60 years of age, and for whom it may be inconvenient to travel due to illness or other reasons, inviting units of the applicants or relevant specialized service agencies may submit the application on their behalf (in which case, a copy of the trustee's ID is also required). Nonetheless, if the Exit-Entry Administration notifies the applicant that an interview is necessary, the applicant must go through the interview in person.

· For the abovementioned materials, any original documents need to be verified, and photocopies submitted alongside them.

· Any application material in a foreign language (other than English) must be translated into Chinese.

· Applicants who have not yet nullified their household registrations in China should wait to apply until after they have done so.

· Foreigners under 18 years of age who are submitting such an application in China for the first time shall prepare: their birth certificates or equivalent documents, the passports and permanent resident permits of their parents or other relevant documents as certification of nationality.

· Foreigners residing in China who apply for an extension to the duration of their stay must file their applications at least seven days prior to the end of the validity period on their visas.

· During the period when the applicant's passport or other travel document is under the legal custody of the Exit-Entry Administration for the issuance of a visa or resident permit, the applicant may, bearing the ticket for the submitted application, travel and reside legally within the territory of China.

· The Exit-Entry Administration of Public Security Bureau may verify the purpose of application through such means as interview, telephone inquiry and on-the-spot investigation.

· Decisions made by the Exit-Entry Administration, including rejecting applications for ordinary visas' extension or reissuance, not issuing foreigners' stay or residence permits, or not extending the duration of residence, are final.

· The right to interpret these instructions resides with the Exit-Entry Administration of the Public Security Bureau.
