The history of Beijing Polytechnic could be traced back to Beijing Posts and Telecommunications Industry School founded in 1958. When Beijing Posts and Telecommunications Industry School merged with Beijing Light Industry Technical College established in 1999, the school was renamed as Beijing Polytechnic. In March, 2007, approved by the People's Government of Beijing Municipality, Beijing Instrumentation Industry School, Beijing No.2 Light Industry School, Beijing Machinery Industry School and Beijing Automobile Industry School were incorporated into Beijing Polytechnic and a new Beijing Polytechnic emerged. In August, 2015, the campus of the new Beijing Polytechnic was moved to Yizhuang. The university became the only higher education institution in the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area.

Beijing Polytechnic has 44 majors in six categories, including mechanic and electric, automotive and transportation, art and design, electronics and information, food and biology, and economics and management. It provides the education which targets at students with different background and adopts different educational system such as full-time higher vocational education, comprehensive education, education of non-commissioned officers, vocational training, adult academic education. It has cultivated more than 100,000 high-quality skilled talents since its foundation.
