Due to the recent resurgence of the pandemic, museums in Beijing have further tightened their prevention and control measures. In addition to general measures such as limiting the number of visitors, requiring reservations in advance,  scanning of health codes, and measuring body temperatures, additional actions have been taken to help make visitors feel more secure.

"Buffer zone" set up at outdoor square

Before entering the museum, visitors will line up to scan their health code and have their temperature taken in the outdoor square at the north gate of the Capital Museum. This buffer zone set up by the museum will also allow for temperature measurement and health status verification on "Health Kit" be conducted in advance.

At present, the Capital Museum has capped its maximum seating capacity at 60 percent. On top of that, measures have been implemented to ensure the steady flow of traffic and no crowding in any given exhibition. Working staff are also required to disinfect all public areas, including the exhibition halls, at least six times a day.

Instant disinfection of interactive exhibits

When entering the China Science and Technology Museum, visitors will see signs located at the entrance of each exhibition hall reminding them about all the prevention and control requirements they must follow. Hand sanitizer will be placed next to these signs as well. In addition to exhibition hall entrances, nearly 30 additional locations where museum-goers tend to gather, such as popular exhibits, will also be provided with hand sanitizer. In order to avoid any crowding at the visitor entrance, the museum will make adjustments to normal entry procedures as needed according to the number of visitors.

In the exhibition halls of the Central Axis Heritage Conservation Center (formerly the Beijing Numismatic Museum), hand sanitizer can also be found next to each interactive project. Working staff will disinfect all interactive exhibits as they are used by on-site visitors.

The Tsinghua University Art Museum has also further stepped up its sanitation and disinfection measures. Public areas are disinfected four times a day, and ventilation has been improved as well.  The check rooms, ticket counters, door handles, elevators and service counters are disinfected and cleaned once every hour.

Self-service audio guide

In order to avoid crowding, many museums have temporarily suspended tour guide services during the epidemic. The Capital Museum has suspended tour guide services, lectures and educational activities. Instead, 1,000 audio guides are prepared by the museum for visitors in need. Each of these devices comes equipped with an ultraviolet sterilization function. Once returned, each device must undergo a 24-hour sterilization period before being lent out again.

The Museum of the War of the Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression also provides audio guide devices which are sterilized using ultraviolet radiation. Visitors can also access the audio guide service via the museum's WeChat public account. The museum has also set up a team of volunteers to, amongst other things, guide visitors and provide additional information on the protection of cultural relics.
