Visiting family members, including spouses, parents (of spouses), children, siblings, (maternal) grandparents, (maternal) grandchildren, and spouses of children of Chinese citizens or foreign nationals with Foreign Permanent Resident ID Cards residing in Beijing.

1. A valid passport or other international travel documents.

2. A completed Visa/Stay Permit/Residence Permit Application Form with a recent 2-inch bareheaded and full-faced color photo against white background.

3. Valid registration of accommodation in Beijing.

4. An applicant aged between 18 and 70 applying for a residence permit valid for more than one year is required to submit a Certificate of Verification (Record of Physical Examination for Foreign Nationals and Overseas Chinese) issued by the Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Authorities within the last six months.

5. A letter certifying the family relationship or kinship.

A Q1 visa holder shall submit a letter clarifying the family relationship.

A holder of other types of visa shall submit supporting documents such as the Marriage Certificate, Birth Certificate (or equivalent document), or Notarial Certificate on the family relationship or kinship (documents issued by foreign authorities or notary offices must be authenticated by the Chinese embassy or consulate in the relevant country).

When an applicant re-applies for a residence permit for visiting the same individual, no supporting documents on the family relationship or kinship are needed except in the case of a spouse, for whom a Marriage Certificate is needed.

6. A valid identity document of the individual to be visited and proof of residence in Beijing exceeding six months.

Preferred types of identity document: Resident Identity Card for a Chinese citizen; Chinese passport and overseas residence certificate for a Chinese citizen residing abroad; Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents for a resident of Hong Kong or Macao; Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents or Travel Document of the People's Republic of China for a resident of Taiwan.

Proof of residence in Beijing for a period exceeding six months is also required. Proof of residence may come in the form of a Household Register issued in Beijing, Residence Card, Work and Residence Card, Residence Card for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, Residence Card for Taiwan Residents, Registration Form of Temporary Residence issued by the police more than six months ago, a Property Ownership Certificate (or tenancy agreement of more than six months) issued in Beijing, social insurance contribution receipt, a certificate of study, employment, or medical treatment, utility payment receipt, etc.

7. A Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card in the event the individual to be visited has permanent residence status.

8. A visiting foreign national of Chinese origin shall submit photocopies of materials proving prior citizenship of the People's Republic of China (e.g. a passport of the People's Republic of China, a certificate of household registration, or a previous Resident Identity Card), proof of Chinese citizenship (valid or renounced) of the visitor's parents, or an original copy of a Foreign National of Chinese Origin Certificate issued by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the People's Government of Beijing Municipality.

1. Residence permits for foreign nationals of Chinese origin have a maximum validity period of five years.

2. Residence permits for applicants aged under 18 or above 60 have a maximum validity period of three years.

3. Residence permits for all other foreign nationals have a maximum validity period of two years.

1. The applicant shall visit the Exit-Entry Administration of the Public Security Bureau in person for the procedures. High-level talent and professionals qualified as much needed by the state, applicants aged under 16 or above 60, or individuals for whom traveling is difficult due to illness or for some other reason may authorize the host organizations or individuals, relatives, or service agencies to apply for an extension of the validity period of their residence permits on their behalf (a photocopy of the agent’s identity documents will be required). The Exit-Entry Administration reserves the right to require an in-person interview for any applicant should it be deemed necessary.

2. An applicant of unknown or conflicting nationality shall submit all foreign passports, permanent residence certificates for the countries issuing the passports, naturalization certificates, and any other nationality-related documents. An applicant under 18 applying in China for the first time shall also submit a Birth Certificate or equivalent document, passports and overseas residence certificates of parents, and any other nationality-related documents.

3. Letters testifying to the family relationship or kinship also include those issued by embassies (consulates) in China in relation to marital status, kinship, parentage, and change of name.

4. Originals of the above-mentioned materials need to be verified before the copies are submitted.

5. Any application material in a foreign language other than English shall be translated into Chinese.

6. An applicant who does not nullify Chinese household registration shall only submit an application after the cancellation of household registration.

7. Foreign nationals applying for a visa or other documents need to book an appointment on the website of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau or WeChat Official Account of the Exit-Entry Administration Department of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau, print out the application form with the barcode, and bring it together with the relevant materials to the appointment.
