Beijing's new municipal administrative center in the city's eastern Tongzhou District has witnessed great development of key enterprises in the area. Two years after a detailed plan for the district's development was approved by the central government, it has become a front-runner for foreign investment and industrial development. In 2020, many companies, including 71 foreign-invested enterprises, have landed in the district, in industries such as finance, culture, health, tourism, and technology. Priorities will be given to the center in selecting venues for pilot programs, key projects, high-performance companies and technological applications, Chen Jining, mayor of Beijing, said. Beijing is shifting some of its administrative functions out of the city center into Tongzhou District to help address problems including traffic congestion and air pollution. Tongzhou District aims to accommodate 1.3 million permanent residents by 2035.
