Mentougou District is located in the western mountainous area of Beijing with a total area of 1,455 square kilometers. Situated in the middle latitudes, it has a continental monsoon climate with a dry and windy spring, a hot and rainy summer, a cool and humid autumn and a cold and dry winter. By the end of 2019, the district has a permanent resident population of 344,000. The district's GDP in 2019 reached 24.93 billion yuan.

Tanzhe Temple in the district, built in the Jin Dynasty, is the oldest temple in Beijing. The temple, the largest ancient temple complex built in the Jin Dynasty in the suburbs of Beijing, still keeps the look of Ming and Qing dynasties, after experiencing the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.
