Beijing is a city blessed with rich cultural heritage, with bookstores almost everywhere, bringing along a prevailing cultural atmosphere.

Beijing was awarded the title of "Capital of Bookstores" during an annual event for Chinese bookstores organized by the Books and Periodicals Distribution Association of China in 2021. By the end of November 2020, the number of physical bookstores in the city reached 1,938, the number of physical bookstores owned by 10,000 people reached 0.9, a total of 200 special bookstores and the most beautiful bookstores were built, and the number of comprehensive bookstores covering over 1,000 square meters reached 39. With 639 newly-opened bookshops, Beijing also took the top spot in China in terms of the number of new bookstores opened in 2020.
